BEST OF REEL: Direction Craft – Dan Mace

Vodacom ‘This is your time’
iDidTht Guest Judge: Brendan Hoffmann, Group Creative Director at Publicis Machine
Awarded: June 2017

Judges Comment: There are some ads that simply ‘work’ on paper and then there are some that live or die based on how well the director brings them to life. This spot for Vodacom is the later. We’ve seen and heard this message before, big corporate claiming to be one with the people, claiming their product will save the day. Sure… Except this time I believe it.
I believe it because there is real honesty in the story and the way it is told. It feels less like an ad and more like a short journey side-by-side with this young South African. The spot is beautifully put together, it has energy, it has rage, it has hope and it even manages to slip in a laugh. The performances are authentic and it beautifully captures the texture and feeling of South African city life. There is a looseness to the shots and yet it is cut very precisely, using a myriad of clever film tricks and techniques that somehow never overpower the flow of the ad. Well done to Dan Mace and all involved, a piece to be really proud of!”

Special Mention: Direction Craft – Jason Fialkov

Bobtail ‘Journey’
iDidTht Guest Judge: Brendan Hoffmann, Group Creative Director at Publicis Machine
Awarded: June 2017

Judges Comment: “This spot for Bobtail, which explores the relationship between a man and his dog, has some pretty great shots in it. Filmed on location in the Transkei over a good few days, the camera work is incredible and the sound and grade finish it off nicely. Very subtle in its storytelling, I had to watch it a few times to make sure I wasn’t missing anything.

Special Mention: Direction Craft – Sunu

KFC ‘Themed Burger’
iDidTht Guest Judge: Steph van Niekerk
Awarded: March 2017

Judges Comment: “When you have a really simple script, the temptation is always to embellish it with some kind of interesting technique or layers of fancy things. I respect the restraint of this spot. It’s simple and understated but expertly crafted. The lead is comfortable in his role and the edit works well with the music to punctuate the spot (0:12 etc). Loved the grade too. All in all there is an authenticity and a feeling of effortlessness to this ad and I think that’s true to the brand it advertises. Nice one, Sunu.

Best of Reel: Direction Craft – Terence Neale

Adidas Originals ‘Original Is Never Finished’
iDidTht Guest Judge: Liam Wielopolski, Chief Creative Officer, DDB South Africa
Awarded: January 2017

Judges Comment: “Brace yourself for the bold new adidas Originals spot, “Original is never finished,” in support of its latest collection which recently launched worldwide. A visually stunning video, dark and menacing in its atmosphere, celebrates street culture, authenticity and going after one’s dreams. Features an inspiring remix of the iconic song “My Way” originally sung by Frank Sinatra, a lot of the spot’s visuals, whether it’s Snoop Dogg transforming into a canine, black basketballs raining from the sky or women destroying drones with baseball bats, work on shock value. And of course, some have been shocked. A quick scroll through the video’s comments on YouTube find as many accounts praising the ad’s visuals as labelling it “satanic”, “Illuminati” and just plain “weird”. But with over seven and a half million views since release, “Original is never finished” is already making a huge splash. Love it Terence Neale!”

Best of Reel: Direction Craft – Sunu

Standard Bank Africa ‘Never Stop Moving Forward’
iDidTht Guest Judge: Eoin Welsh, Chief Creative Officer, Havas Worldwide
Awarded: August 2016

Judges Comment: “Hats off to Sunu for a genuinely engaging piece of filmmaking. The images are beautiful and thoughtfully sequenced, complimenting the script and the idea without overpowering it. The editing is dynamic and smartly paced. Kudos as well for the considerable achievement of avoiding African cliches, not only in the pictures but in the sound design as well. It made our continent feel as sexy and exciting as we Africans know it to be.”

Special Mention: Direction Craft – Dani Hynes

Absa ‘My Moments’
iDidTht Guest Judge: Suhana Gordhan, Creative Director, FCB Johannesburg.
Awarded: November 2016

Judges Comment: “The montage ad is hard to do and do well because for a viewer, it always feels like you’re standing and watching everything like a window display. But Dani Hynes manages to break that display window and make you feel something. Great, natural performances, lovely break in the scenes with real sound design. Never overdone and always honest.”

Special Mention: Direction Craft – Terence Neale

Coca-Cola ‘Jordan Spieth – Rain’
iDidTht Judge: Gordon Ray, Executive Creative Director, M&C Saatchi Abel Cape Town.
Awarded: September 2016

Judges Comment: “Another superb ad, highly entertaining, and laden with smiles and ‘how did they do that’s’ was Egg’s Coke ad, featuring golfer Jordan Spieth. A good old celebrity endorsement skilfully handled. Nice.”
